The Encephalitis Society - Action for Support, Awareness & Research (operating name of The Encephalitis Support Group), a UK charity, was established in 1994, in response to the overwhelming lack of information on encephalitis for people affected by the condition and their need for mutual support in coming to terms with its consequences. Encephalitis is the potentially fatal inflammation of the brain usually caused by a viral infection: the neurological damage (acquired brain injury) which this causes can result in long-term disability. The aim of the Society is to improve the quality of life of all people affected directly and indirectly by encephalitis. In 2002 it was resolved to formally extend the membership and services of the Society to include the Republic of Ireland. Full information on the services of the Society can be found on its website.
