We believe old buildings have a future. From cottages to castles and from churches to cathedrals we are here to help buildings and the people who care for them. Based on years of experience and research we understand how old buildings work. Founded by William Morris in 1877, the SPAB was established in response to the work of Victorian architects whose enthusiasm for harmful restoration caused irreparable damage. Today the SPAB encourages excellence in new design to enrich and complement the built historic environment. We train new generations of architectural professionals and building craftspeople to shape this landscape with sensitivity and skill, offer free advice and we play a statutory role as adviser to local planning authorities. In our casework we campaign actively to protect old buildings at risk.
Since 1923, SPANA - The Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad has supported working animals that loyally serve low-income countries. Operating through a global network of veterinary centres and mobile clinics, we provide lifesaving care for donkeys, horses, mules and oxen who do the work of tractors, trucks and taxis, enabling people to make a meagre living and ensuring the survival of communities. As part of SPANA's programme of activities, we treat working animals in need of veterinary care, train owners in good animal care and teach children about animal welfare - all to transform the welfare of working animals.
We will work tirelessly to raise awareness of SMA, to be a leading advocate for individuals and families and to ensure timely access to diagnosis, effective treatment and best management for all affected by SMA. We will listen to and support our community to make informed choices and will bring together skills, knowledge and resources in the UK and beyond, in our quest to optimise the future lives of all affected by SMA.
